Applications of PAO in Gear Oils and Refrigeration Oils

Using PAO as a base oil, 75W, 75W/90, and 85W/140 automotive multi-grade gear oils can be formulated without adding any viscosity index improvers. These oils have low pour points and low-temperature viscosity, allowing for smooth starting and gear meshing at low temperatures. They also exhibit excellent lubrication after the vehicle warms up, a feature unattainable with mineral oil base oils. PAO-based gear oils are used in industrial equipment due to their excellent lubrication performance, wide operating temperature range, low coefficient of friction, and low mechanical wear. This results in energy savings, making them suitable for high-pressure gears and turbine drive systems operating under high and low temperature conditions. Furthermore, the oils have a long service life, reducing fuel consumption and maintenance costs, minimizing downtime, and thus reducing economic losses from production shutdowns and maintenance, while increasing labor productivity.

 

Because of PAO's low pour point and high film strength, its operating temperature is lower, resulting in less equipment vibration. For compressors using ammonia and halogenated hydrocarbons (R12, R22, R114) as refrigerants, synthetic hydrocarbons exhibit extremely stable compatibility with the refrigerants. Their high viscosity index and excellent low-temperature performance ensure that the compressor can cold-start at very low temperatures. Synthetic hydrocarbons are also suitable for industrial heat pumps operating at high temperatures, such as R114 systems with compression temperatures up to 120°C.
