Lubricant Additives: The "Hidden Champions" Defining Oil Performance
Base oils set the foundation of a lubricant — but additives determine its performance ceiling.
Key additive types and their core functions:
Additive Type | Core Function | Typical Application |
Anti-Wear (AW) | Reduces metal surface wear | Engine oils, gear oils |
Extreme Pressure (EP) | Prevents scoring and welding under high load | Gear oils, metalworking fluids |
Antioxidant | Inhibits oxidation, extends oil life | All high-temperature applications |
Rust Inhibitor | Protects metal surfaces from corrosion | Industrial lubricants, hydraulic fluids |
Pour Point Depressant | Improves low-temperature fluidity | Cold-climate lubricants |
Selection tip: More additives don't mean better performance. The key is precision formulation based on base oil type, operating conditions, and regulatory requirements. Synergy is everything — the right additive combination can deliver "1+1>2" results.
Industry insight: Ashless additives and low-SAPS (Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, Sulfur) formulations are trending to meet China VI / Euro VI emission standards and protect three-way catalysts.
