The Manufacturing Process and Quality Control Standards of PAO Base Oil

PAO base oil (polyalpha-olefins), as the core raw material of high-end synthetic lubricating oil, its outstanding performance stems from precise manufacturing processes and strict quality control.

The manufacturing process flow of PAO base oil

High-purity α -olefins (usually C8-C12) are used as raw materials, and impurities are removed through processes such as molecular sieve adsorption to ensure that the purity of the raw materials is >99%. The polymerization reaction was carried out under the action of Ziegler-Nata catalyst. The reaction temperature (80-120) and pressure (2-5MPa) were strictly controlled. A multi-stage reactor design was adopted to ensure uniform molecular weight distribution. Unsaturated bonds are removed through high-pressure hydrogenation (10-15 mpa), and the stability of the oil product is enhanced by using precious metal catalysts. The hydrogenation degree >99.5% ensures the antioxidant performance. Precise fractionation is carried out to obtain different viscosity grades (such as PAO4, PAO6, PAO8, etc.), and performance improvers are added according to application requirements.

Chemical performance standard: Oxidation stability: RBOT test >300 minutes (ASTM D2272); Evaporation loss: NOACK test <7% (ASTM D5800); Sulfur content: <5ppm (ASTM D5453).
