The Key Role of Extreme Pressure Antiwear Agents in Gear Oil

During operation, gears are subjected to high loads and intense friction. If they are insufficiently lubricated, they are prone to wear, pitting, and even sintering. To address this issue, EP/AW additives have become an important component in gear oil formulations.

Extreme pressure wear-resistant agents can decompose under high pressure and high temperature conditions, generating a chemical reaction film that effectively isolates the metal surface and prevents direct contact, thereby significantly enhancing the anti-wear performance and load-carrying capacity of gear oil. Such additives are indispensable in heavy-duty industrial gear oils, automotive gear oils and Marine gear oils.

Common extreme pressure wear-resistant agents include sulfur and phosphorus-containing compounds and ashless anti-wear agents. The former performs exceptionally well in heavy-duty gears, while the ashless type is more suitable for applications with high environmental protection and cleanliness requirements.

The rational selection of extreme pressure wear-resistant agents can not only extend the service life of gears, but also reduce energy consumption and improve equipment reliability.
