Differences Between Closed-Circuit Gear Oil and Open-Circuit Gear Oil

May 07,2026

Differences Between Closed-Circuit Gear Oil and Open-Circuit Gear Oil:

Different Mechanical Applications:

Industrial closed-circuit gear oil is primarily used in enclosed oil tanks and gearboxes, such as reducers and equipment lubrication stations;

Open-circuit gear oil is primarily used in open gears, such as electric shovels, ball mills, and autogenous mills.

Viscosity differs:

Industrial closed-gear oil: Viscosity ranges from 100 to 460 at 40°C;

Open-gear oil: Most are semi-fluid greases, with viscosity ranging from 1,000 to 46,000 at 100°C;

Different Four-Ball PD Values:

Industrial closed-gear oil has a Four-Ball PD value of 250 kg or higher;

Open-gear oil has a Four-Ball PD value of 500 kg or higher.

Different Cohesiveness:

Industrial enclosed gear oil has significantly higher cohesiveness than open gear oil.

Therefore, industrial enclosed gear oil cannot be used as a substitute for open gear oil. Open gears require good adhesion and cohesiveness, and generally have higher viscosity. Using industrial enclosed gear oil as a substitute can lead to oil leaks, splashing, and other issues, resulting in lubrication failure, environmental pollution, and oil waste.
