What's really inside your lubricant?

Here's the 3-ingredient breakdown every engineer, procurement lead, and maintenance manager should know.

Base Oil — The "body" of the lubricant

Base oil makes up 80–90% of any formula and sets the performance ceiling. It comes in three families:

Mineral (Group I–III): refined from crude, cost-effective, covers everyday lubrication needs

Synthetic (Group IV PAO, Group V including es ers): chemically engineered for extreme temperature, oxidation, and wear resistance — the choice for aerospace, high-performance engines, and industrial gearboxes

Bio-based: plant-derived, biodegradable, ideal for environmentally sensitive applications.

Additives — The "performance shapers"

If base oil is the body, additives are the brain. Antioxidants, anti-wear agents, detergents, dispersants, and viscosity-index improvers turn a basic fluid into a tailored solution. The same base oil can behave completely differently depending on the additive package. Base oil decides the starting point. Additives decide the capability.

Synthetic Esters — The high-performance wildcard

Esters sit in API Group V, but they punch far above their classification. Their polar molecular structure lets them cling to metal surfaces, forming a resilient film that cuts friction and wear even under extreme pressure. Benefits that matter on the plant floor:

  • Wide temperature range with high viscosity index
  • Excellent lubricity → lower energy consumption
  • Outstanding oxidative & thermal stability → 3–8× longer service life vs. mineral oil
  • High biodegradability → ESG-friendly
  • Superior additive solubility → keeps formulations clean and stable

That's why modern high-end engine oils, compressor fluids, and hydraulic fluids increasingly pair PAO + synthetic ester — PAO brings viscosity stability, ester brings metal-wetting and additive compatibility.
