Hydrolytic Stability of Ester Oils

Hydrolytic Stability of Ester Oils

The hydrolysis products of esters are alcohols and acids, so ester lubricants are required to have good hydrolytic stability.

The hydrolytic stability of ester lubricants depends on the geometric structure of the ester molecule, the additives used in the ester, the processing parameters of the ester (acid value, degree of esterification, catalysts and neutralizers for producing residues, etc.) and the application system. The spatial shielding effect of geometric structures can prevent the hydrolysis of ester groups.

The hydrolytic stability of general polyols is better than that of diesters, and branched polyol esters are better than linear polyol esters. Polyester chains, due to their unique molecular geometry, have better hydrolytic stability than most traditional esters. Hydrolysis resistance stability is a key indicator for evaluating the quality of ester-based base oils.
