The Secret of High Viscosity Index: Structural Advantages of Synthetic Ester Base Oil

Viscosity index (VI) is an important indicator for measuring the ability of oil products to maintain stable viscosity under temperature changes. The higher the viscosity index, the less likely the lubricating oil is to become thin at high temperatures and thick at low temperatures, and the wider the applicable working conditions. Among various types of base oils, synthetic ester base oils are highly favored in the high-end lubrication field precisely for their outstanding high viscosity index.

The advantages of synthetic ester base oil stem from its designable molecular structure. By precisely controlling the combination of alcohols and acids, the distribution of synthetic ester molecular chains becomes more uniform and the structure more regular. This makes the molecular movement more stable when the temperature changes, thereby significantly reducing the amplitude of viscosity fluctuations with temperature. Compared with mineral oil, synthetic ester base oil has a smaller viscosity decline at high temperatures and can still maintain good fluidity in low-temperature environments.
