Why is a Lower Acid Value Always Better?

For long-life oils like wind turbine gear oils (designed lifespan typically 7-10 years), controlling the acid value has three main benefits:

Inhibiting autocatalytic reactions: Residual free acid can directly attack ester bonds, triggering hydrolysis to generate more acid, creating a vicious cycle. The lower the initial acid value, the lower the probability of this chain reaction being triggered.

Protecting additive formulations: Extreme pressure anti-wear agents (such as phosphorus and sulfur-containing additives) are added during the blending of finished oils. If the base oil itself has a high acid value, it will preferentially consume some of the additives, leading to a decrease in the anti-wear performance of the formulation.

Extending oil change intervals: According to industry experience, "a 1-point increase in acid value shortens the oxidation resistance time by 10 times." For wind turbine gearboxes that can easily run for hundreds of liters, ultra-low acid value base oils can significantly reduce maintenance costs.
