Classification of Gear Oils for Vehicles
Abroad, the API (American Petroleum Institute) performance classification system and the SAE viscosity classification system are widely adopted. One classification is based on SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) viscosity, which is divided into seven grades. 70W, 75W, 80W, 85W, 90, 140, 250. Grades with the suffix ‘W’ are winter-grade gear oils, classified based on two criteria: the maximum temperature at which the gear oil’s viscosity reaches 150 Pa·s (Pascal-seconds; 150 Pa·s is a critical low-temperature start-up limit) and the minimum kinematic viscosity at 100°C. Gear oils without the ‘W’ suffix are for summer use and are classified based on their kinematic viscosity range at 100°C. Additionally, there are multigrade oils, such as 80W/90 and 85W/90. Another classification system is based on API performance standards. These are divided into six grades, from GL-1 to GL-6, according to the severity of operating conditions.
