The Mechanism of Action of Pour Point Depressant

The mechanism of action of lubricating oil pour point depressants mainly involves altering the morphology and structure of wax crystals to prevent them from aggregating into networks at low temperatures, thereby reducing the pour point and low-temperature fluidity boundary of the lubricating oil.

Adsorption modification effect: The polar groups of the pour point depressant molecules will adsorb onto the surface of wax crystals, hindering their normal growth. The wax crystals formed in this way are smaller and more irregular in shape, and are less likely to overlap with each other to form a network.

Lattice distortion effect: The molecules of the pour point depressant enter the wax crystal growth process, interfering with the ordered arrangement of the wax molecules and causing lattice distortion. This distorted wax crystal cannot be closely packed, thus the network structure is disrupted.

Dispersion effect: The hydrocarbon chain part of the pour point depressant has good compatibility with oil products, which can disperse wax crystals and prevent them from aggregating and settling. The wax crystals are separated from each other, reducing the flow resistance and thus lowering the pour point.
